Job Description

Faculty - Family Medicine (Battle Creek)

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine

Overview:

The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) continues to lead change for health care in Michigan. The DFCM is seeking an additional, OB-optional faculty member for its 6-6-6 Family Medicine Residency in Battle Creek, MI. Launched in 2019 with tremendous community support, the Battle Creek program partners with Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and Grace Health, a beautiful Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that houses the residency’s outpatient practice. This program successfully graduated its first class in 2022 and remains one of the only residencies in the state to be based entirely in an FQHC. Known as “Cereal City, USA”, Battle Creek is a vibrant, diverse, well-resourced area with numerous opportunities for collaboration, as the program develops rich learning experiences for trainees while demonstrating its commitment to improving community health.

This program joins the established WMed Family Medicine Residency in Kalamazoo, both led by a new department chair emphasizing faculty development, education, seed grants, and supported by generous institutional CME and licensing provisions. The two programs work collaboratively to enhance the education of all students and residents, leveraging each group's unique talents and offerings to strengthen the department. As a community supported residency with the backing of an academic university program we have the best of both worlds. Our residents are trained to competently practice the full scope of family medicine, including outpatient, inpatient, newborn care and obstetrics to serve the community needs of their future practices. The program is open to supporting leading edge skills and innovation in its faculty.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical services through resident supervision and develop a personal patient panel.
  • Cover precepting, inpatient, and newborn services; OB is optional.
  • Recruitment, supervision, education, and assessment of resident physicians.
  • Participate in quality improvement, utilization review, and outcomes management.
  • Opportunity to participate and lead in committees and initiatives with our partners.
  • Provide high-quality instruction for undergraduate and graduate medical education.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Completion of an accredited residency program.
  • Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Family Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.
  • Eligibility for Michigan license.
  • Dedicated commitment to providing a quality educational experience for residents and medical students.
  • A sense of adventure and willingness to work as a team player as we continue to excel as a new Family Medicine Residency.
