Reporting to the Regional Director of Operations, the Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of multiple locations within the assigned region. This role ensures the efficient and high-quality delivery of services while maintaining exceptional customer satisfaction. The Operations Manager will manage a team of on-site supervisors and staff, implement standardized operational procedures, and drive financial performance to meet or exceed company targets.

Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) manufactures, leases, and repairs railcars in North America for railroads and industrial companies. With roots dating back over 125 years, we are part of an operation that owns and leases a diversified portfolio of approximately 120,000 tank cars and 10,000 freight cars, operates two tank car manufacturing facilities, and has a network of more than 110 full-service and mini / mobile repair shops. The Operations Manager will be responsible for leading teams, optimizing workflows, managing resources, and ensuring that operational objectives are met across all locations. This is a key leadership position within the company that requires the ability to oversee multiple sites, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and align operational strategies with overall business goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leadership & Team Management: Provide direction and support to on-site supervisors and staff, fostering a positive, respectful, and productive work environment. Focus on developing team members' skills and promoting succession planning to maintain staffing levels.
  • Customer Relationship Management: Build and nurture long-term relationships with customers, ensuring their expectations are met and exceeded. Develop strategic plans to align operations with customer needs and goals.
  • Operational Efficiency: Identify gaps in current operations, implement process improvements, and optimize workflow to drive greater productivity and efficiency across facilities.
  • Performance Monitoring & Growth: Track key operational and financial metrics, including costs and profitability. Use this data to implement initiatives that improve operational performance and support business growth.
  • Safety Compliance: Oversee the implementation of company and customer-specific safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
  • Quality Assurance: Manage the execution of the quality assurance program, ensuring adherence to industry standards. Participate in both internal and external quality audits as required.
  • Collaboration with Support Functions: Work closely with Safety, Quality Assurance, HR, and other departments to align resources and ensure the smooth operation of all facilities.
  • Staff Development & Succession Planning: Oversee the recruitment, training, and development of team members to ensure a high-performing workforce that is aligned with the company’s growth objectives.
  • Financial Management: Take ownership of Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibilities for assigned sites. Collaborate with the team to control costs, improve margins, and contribute to overall financial performance.
  • Budgeting & Capital Planning: Participate in the annual budgeting and capital planning process, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently to meet operational goals.
  • Site Travel: Travel to various sites (approximately 30% of the time) to oversee operations and ensure that facilities are meeting performance and safety standards.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as required to support the overall success of the business

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:

  • A university degree or college diploma is preferred, with at least five (5) years of experience in a technical managerial or supervisory role
  • Strong leadership, team building, and change management skills.
  • Experience with Railcar Repair, AAR Rules, and Tank Car Qualifications is an asset.
  • Familiarity with process management, quality assurance programs, and continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) is highly desirable.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to blend technical expertise with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams) and experience with inventory management systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in managing complex customer relationships.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Work environments include indoor facility settings and outdoor locations exposed to all weather conditions. Candidates should anticipate potential exposure to noise, fumes, and fluctuating temperatures.
